At the annual Conference of the Gods, it has been decided that Odysseus is worth saving. After a strong argument by Athena the rest of the council members were convinced and Hermes has been dispatched to guide him home safely. The leader of the opposition, Poseidon, clearly was not pleased with this verdict saying, “This is a disgrace! Does no one still respect me? If it were not for Zeus, Odysseus would already be at the bottom of the sea by now”. Who is the correct party? I’ll let you decide.
Athena

Athena believes that brave Odysseus has already suffered enough. She has seen him weep at the suffering of his crew and spend day and night longing for his wife Penelope. Unlike Poseidon she has seen him grow and lose some of his deadly hubris. Athena thinks that even if he is allowed to return now, Odysseus will still be in fear of and respect Poseidon. One of Athena’s most controversial ideas is that she believes that Odysseus was right to harm the Cyclops if it was to protect himself and his crew.
Poseidon

Poseidon has very different views on this subject. He believes that Odysseus has not suffered nearly enough: “He should be left at sea until that overconfident fool learns his lesson”. When Odysseus blinded his son Poseidon was immediately whipped up into a fit of rage. He thinks that Odysseus will not respect him unless he remains lost a sea for most of his life.
Interviews
After asking a few citizens of Ithaca we received and interesting spread of ideas.
“I just was my dad to come home” Prince Telemachus
“I like him to stay at sea. After all, this palace has some lovely accommodations” Suitor Antonius
“Odysseus is just a great guy. He should definitely be saved” Mysterious beggar
Who do you think is correct?
