Fathers and Sons

The bonds between father and son are some of the closest and strongest bonds that can never be broken. There are many examples in which this is true in the Odyssey. For example, the bond between Odysseus and Telemachus. During a time of fighting they never leave each other's side. From the moment they meet they are together. The first person to know of Odysseus’ identity is his son. Another example of this unbreakable bond is the one between Agamemnon and his son Orestes. Agamemnon goes to war along with Odysseus. When he returns he is greeted with the fact that his wife has been unfaithful. To stop him from telling anyone, his own wife, Clytemnestra kills him and stays with her new partner. Orestes finds out about what she has done to his father, and plots his revenge. As years pass Orestes returns home after running away and mercilessly kills his mother and her partner for what they have done in order to avenge the life of his father. Also when it comes to Odysseus and his father, they are close as well. When Odysseus returns he knows that his father is so sad about him. He is at the edge of dying from sorrow. After all is fixed at home he goes and sees his father. Once he reveals who he actually is, his father is filled with joy as they are reunited. Although the bonds between families are also shown in the Odyssey, one major one that stands out to be true is that the bonds between a father and his son are the closest ones that can never be broken.
